Rutendo started swimming at a very young age. With one gold medal, one silver medal and a brilliant record of breaking the SEA Games record, though Nguyen Huu is the top swimmer of Vietnam at present, critics say that Phuoc will soon break all records and make his name on the top.
Though Phuoc only won a Gold Medal his performance still caught the eyes of many. This year in 2011 Hoang Quy Phuoc, became the first swimmer from the central city of Da Nang to earn a ticket to the 2010 London Olympic Games after winning the men's Butterfly event in a clocking time of 53.56 seconds at the Malaysia Open Swimming Tournament.
This result, made Phuoc not only secure a gold medal but he also broke the Vietnamese national record as well as exceeding the International Olympic Committee B Criterion of 54.19 seconds. He also got the green card for participating in the World Swimming Championships which is to be held in july in China, together with his team mates Vo Thai Nguyen and Pham Thanh Nguyen.
He is considered an icon in Vietnamese sport, a miracle of the lord for young talents are quite lacking in Vietnam.
This 18 year swimmer has a number of nicknames because of various reasons. He is called "My Khe Otter" or "Han River Superman" since he joined national tournaments in the year 2008. At that time he was a 1.78m tall boy with an arm length of 1m93cm; thus was seen as a very promising talent.
Phuoc's house not being far from the beach, he was quite used to swimming in the Ocean waves from his very childhood itself. However it was only in 2004 that Phuoc turned professional and was discovered by Hoang Quy Phuoc Coach Phan Van Toai, head of the Swimming Department of the Da Nang Sports Training centre.
He made great progress under his coach and in May 2006 was selectd for the national youth swimming team and just a year later in 2007 he became a member of the national team. Phuoc won two golds, three silvers and two bronze medals at the Southeast Asian Youth Age Group Championships. He also won eight more golds in the Southeast asian Clubs Championships. At the national diving and swimming competition Phuoc became the youngest swimmer to break a national record even competing with swimmers senior to him.
Gradually Phuoc proved to be a great hope for the Vietnamese swimming clubs. At the 6th National Sports Games in 2010, Phuoc won nine gold medals with six individual golds, broke nine national records in the 25m pool and then won 13 gold medals and 13 national records in the 50m pool.
