Martin started water polo at a very young age of 12 years at the Drummoyne Water Polo club. She says, she started playing water polo with inspiration from her brothers, Tyler, 19 years and Connor, 18 years. They have travelled the world representing Australia in the sport.
"They started playing when I was 10 and after watching them play for about two years I wanted to give it a go," Shannan said.
"Winning awards like this is good encouragement for all the hard work I do."
This 17 year student, who is quite a master in centre forward and centre back, finds time to practice and train herself around 20 hours a week. Shannan also went out to US and Europe to play in the Australian Schoolgirls team putting up some outstanding performance there. She had also been nominated as a week's Inner West Courier Junior Sports Star nominee.
Recently she captained the Australian team in New Zealand and giving an extraordinary performance she brought back a silver medal for her country.
"I was really surprised when they announced I was captain of the team," Shannan said.
"I wasn't really expecting it or thinking about it."
